Saint-Romain-le-Puy: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture
The former priory is partly classified as a historic monument; the church was classified in 1862 and the remains of the priory in 1875. Its main construction phases date from the 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th centuries. Parts of the priory church are covered with wall paintings from the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th centuries.
The Château de La Bruyère et ses dépendances is also partly classified as a historic monument and partly listed as a historic monument. Its main construction phases date from the fourth quarter of the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century.
The Salle Hildegarde houses a tourist information point operated by the Histoire et Patrimoine association. Behind the church, the former rectory contains a free cultural heritage interpretation space with archival documents and historical objects. The former rectory also hosts temporary exhibitions on the history of the village and on painters, sculptors and photographers. The medieval garden Le Clos d’Hildegarde features colourful flower beds as well as medicinal and useful plants. Le Clos Hildegarde is open to the public every day from April to October, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
At the priory, guided tours and themed visits are offered in cooperation with the Pays d’Art et d’Histoire and the tourist office. Along the ascent from the Montée de Maubec to the Pic, helmets and QR codes have been installed to provide a virtual-reality interpretation of the medieval priory. Every year, the priory association organises a cultural season as well as programmes for the European Heritage Days.
Nature and landscape
A hiking trail almost completely circles the summit and offers views of the Monts du Forez, Montbrison and the plain, the Monts du Lyonnais and the Pilat. The hiking trail crosses the Canal du Forez at the Pont de Pierre and then follows the banks of the Oratoire.
The Canal du Forez draws water from the Loire at the Barrage de Grangent to irrigate the Forez plain and its slopes. The viewpoint on the basalt cone offers expansive views over the Forez plain. The basalt cone is home to an inconspicuous Mediterranean flora, including fig trees, anise and almond trees.
The ZNIEFF Rivière de la Mare de Boisset à St Marcellin is administratively assigned to the municipality of Saint-Romain-le-Puy. It is of ecological and faunal interest and concerns fish, amphibians, birds, mammals, butterflies and other insects.
On the slopes of the Pic, visitors can learn about viticulture and taste grape varieties together with winegrowers.
Pilgrimage routes and history
The Chemins-de-Compostelle hike between Saint-Romain-le-Puy and Le Puy-en-Velay takes six days and passes through the Loire Valley and over the Monts du Forez. Saint-Romain-le-Puy is a junction of two former pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, along which pilgrims arrived either from Cluny or from Lyon.
