Culture
The exterior of the Église Saint-André and its interior capitals are considered noteworthy. The Cluniac priory of Sail-sous-Couzan was founded in 1055 and was first mentioned in a papal bull on October 16, 1109.
Numerous remains of feudal military architecture have been preserved at the Forteresse de Couzan, including high walls, a citadel, the Tour des Arrêts, former dungeons, the commandery, and an outer bailey. The site’s Romanesque chapel dates from the 12th century and is classified as a historic monument. The former thermal baths of Sail-sous-Couzan retain wooden and brick-built galleries that surrounded a central garden and led to the bathing cabins.
The Grotte des Fées also reaches far back into the past: worked flints and bones were found there that may date from the late Magdalenian period, approximately from 14,000 to 9,500 BC.
Hiking
The 13-kilometre circular hiking trail Le Couzan begins in Sail-sous-Couzan, crosses the heights above Sail-sous-Couzan, and offers beautiful views of the Plaine du Forez.
The La Grotte des Fées trail is an easy hike of around 9 kilometres, lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. After descending into the valley, it leads to the Grotte aux fées, which is located on a mountain slope.
