Culture and history

The Château de Montrenard in the Montrenard district of Pouilly-sous-Charlieu was placed under heritage protection by decree dated 15 April 1935. The PLM railway station of Pouilly-sous-Charlieu was located on the line from Roanne to Paray-le-Monial, opened in 1882, and became the starting point of the line to Chalon-sur-Saône in 1889.

On the “Les Chambons de Loire” trail, a footbridge in the Bas de Rajasse district spans the confluence of the Jarnossin. The “Les Chambons de Loire” discovery trail is signposted and equipped with educational information panels. The “De la Loire au Cul de Sornin” circular discovery trail starts at the Loire bridge, is 2.6 km long and leads to the mouth of the Sornin.

The approximately 10 km-long “Les Chambons de Loire” trail runs along the right bank of the Loire between the Aiguilly bridge near Vougy and the Loire crossing in Pouilly-sous-Charlieu. It can be walked in both directions and is intended for people with some hiking experience. The “Entre Loire et Campagne – PR 28” hiking route follows the Loire and then continues through a landscape of meadows, forests and châteaux.

The 21 km R4 cycling loop “Boucle rurale du Grand Couvert” starts in Pouilly-sous-Charlieu and offers views of the Château de Montrenard and the Château de Poyet. The “VTT 5 Rouge” mountain-biking circuit can be started in Pouilly-sous-Charlieu. Montrenard Equitation offers classical and ethological riding, as well as recreational and outdoor activities.

Nature

The banks of the Loire in Pouilly-sous-Charlieu invite visitors to take walks; the Loire provides a habitat there for grey herons, little egrets, swans and beavers. The renaturalisation of a former gravel pit on the banks of the Loire in Briennon and Pouilly-sous-Charlieu has created habitats that promote the reproduction of the endangered pike.

Local life

The Marché de Pouilly-sous-Charlieu takes place every Sunday morning opposite the town hall. Around 15 vendors offer food, clothing, horticultural produce and flowers there. The Restaurant de La Loire in Pouilly-sous-Charlieu is associated with Chef Raux’s cuisine and was awarded a Michelin star in 2023.
