Nature

Marcenod is a village in the mid-mountain range of the Monts du Lyonnais. At 946 metres, the Crêt Malherbe is the highest point in the Monts du Lyonnais.

The green circular route of the Chemins du facteur leads around the Crêt Malherbe, the highest point of the massif. It runs along paths and small roads that provide access to hamlets and remote farms.

Region

Marcenod belongs to the Saint-Étienne Métropole area and is assigned to its tourism office; at the same time, the municipality considers itself part of the identity of the Monts du Lyonnais.

There is a picnic area in Marcenod with an exceptional panorama. At the Bois de l’Hôpital, near the highest point of the Monts du Lyonnais, the view extends across the Gier Valley, the Pilat and the Alps.

There is starting signage for the Chemins du facteur in the village of Marcenod. Alternatively, you can start at the Bois de l’Hôpital leisure area at the junction of the D65 and D23 southeast of the town centre.

Culture

The Église de Marcenod was built in 1862 by the inhabitants through donations and labour, and stands in the centre of Marcenod.

It is made of exposed regional natural stone, with the joints finished on the outside; inside, it is plastered with lime. The pillars, the surrounds of the stained-glass windows and the entrance portico are made of dressed stone; the vaults are made of plaster on wooden laths.

History

At the lieu-dit Trocésar in the municipality of Marcenod stands the Château de Trocésar, also known as Château des trois Césars. It is a 16th-century residence and was formerly a fief of Grammond.

Only an imposing round tower remains of the Château de Trocésar; it preserves monumental fireplaces from the 16th century.

In the hamlet of La Thomassière, the de la Roche au loup path leads to a megalithic site with upright natural rocks and megalithic stones.
