Hiking

The “L’Étrat d’hier et d’aujourd’hui” hiking trail is approximately 5 km long and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The “Sentier des Crêtes” is approximately 10 km long and takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Renting a holiday apartment in L'Étrat can be part of your own stay planning.

The three municipal hiking trails are between 5 and 10 km long and differ in how well their length and elevation gain are suited to the abilities of hikers. An information board at the starting point on Place du Plâtre, opposite the church, presents the three hiking trails, their points of interest and their level of difficulty. A five-panel folded brochure at L'Étrat town hall contains maps of the three circular routes, as well as information about notable sites and the history of the town.

Culture and history

The Église de L'Étrat dates from 1850. The narrow, elongated building was constructed in a rather eclectic style with predominant Romanesque elements. The church contains a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, decorated with a sculpture attributed to Fabisch.

Several houses in L'Étrat date from the 14th century. Originally and for a long time, L'Étrat was a place of passage, probably little more than a hamlet, on the edge of the paved Roman long-distance road known as the “via strata”. The themed hiking trails refer to various stages in the development of L'Étrat and to the economic growth of the Saint-Étienne basin.

La Bertrandière became an exhibition venue for paintings and antiques.

The Centre sportif Robert-Herbin in L'Étrat brings together ASSE’s professional section, training facilities and administrative services. The sports centre includes a grass competition pitch, three grass training pitches, as well as one covered and one uncovered artificial-turf pitch.
