The Thiou is a 3.5-kilometre riverside path that extends as far as Cran-Gevrier. The promenade along the Thiou is open year-round. The “Au fil du Thiou industriel” walking route leads from Île Saint-Joseph in Annecy to the former site of the Forges de Cran. The tour of the same name explores the ancient, modern and contemporary history of the Thiou.

Planning a trip to Cran-Gevrier centred around the Thiou and its industrial heritage may include the desire to rent a holiday apartment.

Nature

At the Thiou, the visitor offering includes individual and group visits as well as guided, educational and themed tours.

Culture

The Espace des Forges is located in a former deconsecrated chapel and is intended to become a lively, multidisciplinary venue. The Eglise Saint-Étienne du Pont-Neuf also combines architecture and local history: its stained-glass windows were made by the Paris workshops of Carl Mauméjean. The church is the final stop on a heritage tour designed by Annecy tour guides under the “Ville et pays d'Art et d'Histoire” label.

The Eglise Saint-Étienne du Pont-Neuf is dedicated to Saint Stephen, as was the first parish of Gevrier, a Romanesque church founded in the 12th century and destroyed in 1793.

History

The Tissage à Cran is a stop on the “Le Thiou industriel” heritage tour. At this site, cotton yarn was turned into fabric on mechanised looms; the machines were powered by water through a single water wheel. Another stop on this tour is the Forges et Fonderies de Cran. Its buildings and waterfall can be seen from the bridge of Cran.

Île aux vannes preserves the memory of craft and industrial activities that followed one another from the 18th century to the 1930s. In 2004, the municipality of Cran-Gevrier acquired an old turbine from the Brassilly hydroelectric power station. Today, it is installed beside the La Turbine cultural centre and contributes to preserving the industrial memory of Cran-Gevrier.

Discovery

La Turbine sciences is a centre for scientific, technical and industrial culture. Visitors are actively involved through exhibitions, talks and workshops. As part of the scientific discovery experience, they can touch, experiment and explore freely.

The cultural offering also includes Cinéma La Turbine, an arthouse cinema bearing the “Art et Essai” label and recognised for its young audience offering (“Jeune public”). The Médiathèque La Turbine offers free use of its multimedia collections and various services. Individual and guided tours of the Brassilly turbine are available.
