Culture and History

Chanaz’s historic heritage includes the Maison de Boigne, which is partly protected as a historic monument. The Musée Gallo-Romain de Chanaz is housed in a former 15th-century Gothic chapel dedicated to Notre Dame de la Miséricorde. Its permanent exhibition is based on excavations carried out in Portout between 1976 and 1987. These uncovered the remains of a pottery workshop established on the banks of the Canal de Savière in the first half of the 5th century AD. Visits to the exhibition about the potters of Portout are possible by reservation.

The Château de Grammont is a complex classified as a castle in the area around Chanaz. The Abbaye d’Hautecombe and the Abbaye de Bons-en-Bugey are also located nearby, and both are classified as historic sites.
