Nature
The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi takes visitors from Chamonix town centre to an altitude of 3,842 metres in 20 minutes and to the gateway to the high mountains. A visit includes the Pas dans le Vide, a glass box suspended 1,000 metres above the abyss.
Montenvers is located at an altitude of 1,913 metres and offers panoramic views of the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses. The Montenvers area can be reached on the famous rack railway from Chamonix. A new gondola lift takes visitors from there to the Grotte de Glace in the glacier. Hikes from Montenvers also include the crossing to Plan de l’Aiguille via the Grand Balcon Nord.
Plan de l’Aiguille lies at an altitude of 2,310 metres and is a starting point for hikes in summer. The circular trail to Lac Blanc from the summit of the Flégère cable car runs through the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve and offers views of Mont Blanc. Another hike to Lac Blanc starts in Les Praz de Chamonix and takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes each way.
The Via Ferrata des Evettes is a via ferrata route in the Aiguilles Rouges massif opposite Mont Blanc and is located around 30 minutes from the arrival point of the Flégère cable car. It is suitable for beginners and children; reaching the site takes 30 minutes on foot, and the groups are accompanied by a mountain guide.
Culture
The Musée des Cristaux – Espace Tairraz presents collections on Alpine mineralogy from France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria, with a particular focus on specimens from the Mont Blanc massif. Guided tours with a crystal hunter from the Club de Minéralogie de Chamonix are offered there for visitors aged 10 and over and by reservation. The Glaciorium is an interactive area dedicated to glaciology and the history of the Mer de Glace.
The Musée du Mont-Blanc reopened under its new name after five years of construction and has 1,800 m² of exhibition space. The Guides du Patrimoine de la vallée de Chamonix (Guides PSMB) offer guided tours for individuals and groups.
