Villeperdrix: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Villeperdrix’s Espace Naturel Sensible (Sensitive Natural Area) encompasses the Angèle and Buègue mountains, which are cut through by the Léoux gorges. It is intended to be accessible to the public for educational exploration; information panels on plants, animals and landscapes are planned to inform visitors.

Nature

The rocks of the Eygues gorges provide nesting sites for griffon vultures. On Villeperdrix’s steep slopes, olive cultivation is closely associated with dry-stone terraces.

Trails and History

The Sentier des oliviers is an easy 3.7 km circular hiking trail with a walking time of around two hours and 144 metres of ascent. It starts and ends at the lower entrance to Villeperdrix. Above the Eygues gorges, the route follows an old Roman road carved into the rock, along which the remains of several bridges are still visible. The remains of the Roman bridge on this route date from the middle of the 2nd century AD.

Culture and Craftsmanship

The Church of Saint-Pierre was part of a small priory that had been indirectly dependent on Cluny Abbey since the 11th century. Between 1991 and 2013, the church was restored; the work also included its furnishings, paintings, Stations of the Cross and stained-glass windows.

Below Villeperdrix, a lavender distillation apparatus has been preserved and continues to distil the produce of a farm every summer. The information centre “Le savoir-faire de la pierre-sèche” presents dry-stone terraces, also known as “restanques”, as one of the oldest forms of rural land management.
