On the way
The route runs across the meadows of Champ des Marais, which are bordered by Piégu to the south and Chauvet to the north. For mountain biking tours, the signposted VTT route “Tour de la haute vallée de la Drôme” is available, a three-day route between Luc-en-Diois, Valdrôme and Le Pilhon.
The “Le col de Cabre et Val-Maravel” route leads to the hamlet of Le Pilhon at an altitude of 1,100 metres. A short variant of the same route follows a downhill path towards Fourcinet.
Nature and landscape
The state-owned Forêt domaniale de Maravel is located in the municipalities of Beaurières, Lesches-en-Diois and Val-Maravel. Val-Maravel is also part of the type 2 ZNIEFF area “BEAUCHÊNE OCCIDENTAL - MONTAGNE D'AUREILLE - BOIS NOIRS - BOIS DES FANGES - BOIS DE LA LONGEAGNE”.
Access to this wooded valley with no through road leads through the Maravel gorges, which were cut through to build the road. At Fourcinet, the gorges open out into a valley characterised by blue marls and large farmhouses dominated by Mount Puy.
Hamlets and architectural heritage
From the hamlet of Le Pilhon, there are views of the Dévoluy and the Buëch Valley. The hamlet's church dates from the 13th century, and the hamlet also includes a chapel.
Fourcinet has a compact, rustic settlement structure; the main road provides access to two rows of farmhouses. La Bâtie-Crémezin is the name of a fortified farmhouse that was destroyed by fire.
Accommodation in Le Pilhon
Le Pilhon lies at an altitude of 1,239 metres and is known as the “highest hamlet in the Drôme département”. Les Jardins du Pilhon is a charming stone house in a small village surrounded by mountains at an altitude of 1,100 metres. The accommodation is located in a former farmhouse and is close to hiking trails.
