The signposted Circuit historique de Saillans leads through Saillans and showcases Roman, religious and medieval sights, including a Roman marble stele, the Romanesque Church of Saint-Géraud, fountains, and picturesque lanes with arches, footbridges and vaulted passageways.
Culture and History
The Gallo-Roman milestone of Saillans is protected as a historic monument; it was classified by decree of 16 November 1905. Two fountains near the church and at the Fossé date from 1725.
The Circuit de découverte des arceaux, passerelles et passages voûtés de Saillans leads to more than 50 arches, vaulted passageways and footbridges at 29 locations in the former fortified districts. Roman remains in Saillans are associated with the Mutatio Darentiaca, a station for changing draught animals on the Roman road. A marble inscription is located in front of the tourist office, approximately 1.5 km west of the town centre.
There are three destinations around Saillans: La tour de Crest, a castle; the Ancienne abbaye de Saint-Thiers de Saou, a monument; and Crest Tower, a historic site. The Chapelle Saint-Médard, a church, is also located nearby.
Nature and Trails
The Géobalade au frais le long de la Drôme is a shady walk along an old irrigation canal that supplied the factories of Saillans, on an easily accessible route.
The circular trail Sur les chemins de la Clairette – Les cabanons de vigne is a family-friendly loop through vineyards producing Clairette de Die and passes numerous traditional vineyard huts.
Rocher de Cresta, a peak, is located near Saillans. The surrounding area also includes Roc de Barry, a peak, Serre de Laoup, a mountain, and Le Veyou, a peak.
The Drôme and Outdoor Activities
The departures from Canoë Drôme in Saillans include canoeing routes ranging from 3 to 49 kilometres. From Saillans, Canoë Drôme offers canoe, kayak and mini-raft rentals for trips on the Drôme from Pont-de-Quart to Crest.
In the Pays de Saillans, swimming is one of the many outdoor activities.
Cycling
The Saillans tourist office carries the Accueil Vélo label and offers a bicycle repair station as well as two bicycle storage boxes.
