In the historic centre of Romans-sur-Isère, the “Grand Voyage” Stations of the Cross comprises 21 stations; a further 19 stations can be found at the Calvaire des Récollets. History and culture
The 37-metre-high Tour Jacquemart is a 12th-century tower built from molasse. It stands on a former gate of Romans-sur-Isère’s first fortifications. The Musée de la Chaussure is housed in the former Visitation convent. Its thematic and encyclopaedic collection comprises 20,000 items covering the history of footwear from antiquity to the present day; 16,500 pieces from the collection are displayed in rotation, covering 4,000 years of footwear history.
The Collégiale Saint-Barnard originated as a monastery founded in 838 by Barnard, the Archbishop of Vienne. It houses nine embroidered tapestries depicting the Passion of Christ, which can be viewed seasonally and as part of a guided tour. The Maison du Mouton is one of the oldest houses in Romans-sur-Isère and is now a free heritage centre open to everyone.
Experiences
The Cité de la Chaussure offers tours of its production workshops. The individual steps involved in making shoes that are produced entirely in Romans are demonstrated. The Cité also includes a boutique with more than 15 shoe brands that are produced entirely in the Romans area. The “Les 12 chaussures géantes à Romans” tour follows a shopping route past 12 monumental shoes, each approximately 2 metres high and inspired by models from the museum.
The workshops at La Cordo cover artistic direction, sound engineering, mixing, mastering, communication, writing and singing, and are led by music professionals. The Cité de la Musique is open to the public and includes a 270-seat auditorium.
Nature
The Parc François Mitterrand Belvedere Saint-Romain offers views over the Isère and the Vercors. The Canal de la Martinette runs through the town and provides a pleasant promenade with insights into the flora and fauna of aquatic habitats.
Cuisine
The Cité de la Raviole offers free, self-guided visits lasting approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
