Culture

The Chapelle Notre Dame des Barquets stands on the ancient Roman road from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Grignan. It dates from the 11th century, is dedicated to Notre-Dame de Pitié, also known as Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, was restored in 1710 and fitted with a bell tower.

The Chapelle Saint-Claude is located on the former Roman road from Grignan to Orange and was built in the 9th century along an old Roman road. Its origins are associated with the murder of a muleteer at this location and the subsequent construction of the small chapel by muleteers who wanted to ward off such misfortune.

The Chapelle Saint-Félix is an 11th-century chapel in the Romanesque and Moorish styles. It was built at the foot of the rock on which the castle stands and is located within the fortified village settlement. The chapel can be visited free of charge; private and group guided tours are available on request, and opening hours can be obtained from the town hall.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean has the layout of a Latin cross and two elegant church spires. It was used as a parish church for a quarter of a century and can be visited free of charge with a guided tour on request; opening hours can be obtained from the town hall. The Eglise St Jean l’évangéliste was built in 1902 in the neo-Gothic style of the Belle Époque and has a thirty-metre-high spire.

L’Etoile des poètes stands on a section of the castle wall and bears a dedication commemorating Frédéric Mistral; it is also dedicated to poets.
