Culture

The cultural heritage tour “Marsanne through eight centuries of history” offers panoramic views over the Plaine des Andrans, the Forêt de Saou and the Vercors. The Beffroi of Marsanne is a former watchtower built above the Lachard Gate, the main gate of the fortified village. The Chemin du Ventol follows the route of Marsanne’s former fortification walls and offers views over the Plaine des Andrans, the Forêt de Saou, Mont Couspeau and the Vercors.

The Fresneau sanctuary complex includes a chapel built in 1605 in place of an older sanctuary destroyed at the end of the Wars of Religion. The complex also includes a large sanctuary dating from the mid-19th century. Fresh water is collected for bottling at the Fontaine de Fresneau throughout the year.

The Church of Saint-Félix has been listed as a historic monument since July 13, 1926. Marsanne’s old village can be visited free of charge every day throughout the year, without a guide; its medieval section has been undergoing restoration since the 1960s. The historic village, situated on a hill, can be explored on foot via Rue des Comtes de Poitiers, known as “la Côte.” The route leads from Château de Montluisant to the Beffroi, passing through the 17th century along the way.

The Marsanne terroir gave the Marsanne grape variety its name. It is used, among others, in wines from the northern Côtes du Rhône and from Switzerland’s Valais region.

Nature

The Notre-Dame de Fresneau sanctuary lies in the Fresneau valley at the entrance to Marsanne’s large forest. The municipal forest of Marsanne covers more than 1,100 hectares and is known for its wild lily of the valley, daffodils and numerous hiking trails. It is also home to a park with eight large wind turbines. Guided tours beneath the rotor blades explain their installation, operation and output; the tours take place by reservation.

Getting Around

The Marsanne tourist information office rents mountain bikes and e-bikes by the day, half-day or for several days, and sells hiking and cycling routes.

Renting a vacation apartment in Marsanne is part of planning a stay in the village.
