Culture and History

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Charols dates back to 957 in its first phase of construction. It has a basilica-style layout with a nave, two side aisles and three semicircular apses. By decree of 27 July 1994, the church was listed as a Monument historique.

From the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, Charols had a strong tradition of silkworm farming. In the second half of the 19th century, two annual fairs were also held, on 12 May and 1 October. In addition, a patronal festival was held on the Sunday after 29 August to commemorate the beheading of John the Baptist.

Nature

The Roubion is a river with highly dynamic flow and a largely natural character. The “Rivière du Roubion” Natura 2000 site covers 619 hectares and is designated as a protected river area.

Paths and Activities

On the return journey, the walking route from Charols follows the Roubion. For mountain biking tours, “Les bords du Roubion” is available as a 9.97 km moderate circular route starting and ending in Charols. The route is signposted as a yellow mountain-bike route for blue circular route no. 25.

The centre of Charols is located on the D9 departmental road, an alternative route to Lyon that crosses the town from north to south.
