Chabeuil: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Porte Monumentale gives Chabeuil a distinctive historical feature: the gate has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. It is made of molasse on a Gallo-Roman foundation, had military and symbolic functions, and provided access to the main road. Beneath its vault are the upside-down coats of arms of the Grimaldi family; above them is the revolutionary motto “la Nation, la Loi”, decorated with a royal crown.

Culture

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste also preserves striking details. It was consecrated on 19 March 1863 and has a rare Greek-cross floor plan. Its 19th-century Neo-Byzantine furnishings include polychrome murals in the choir and the adjoining chapels.

The Canal des Moulins shaped Chabeuil’s urban structure as well as its historical economic production. It was associated, among other things, with yarn processing, paper production, and leather processing.

Nature

The Bachassier wetland is a recognised natural area with ponds and pools. It serves to protect the ecological diversity of the area, including its fauna, flora, and habitats. The “Le Sentier des Deux Renards” circular trail leads through the riverside woodland along the Véore, past a fishing pond, and through the Bachassier wetland, which has been designated as a sensitive natural area.

In the northern part of the hill stands the “Notre Dame des Champs” statue; from there, a remarkable viewpoint offers views of the village and the Rhône Valley.

Paths and Circular Tours

The “Balade découverte de Chabeuil” leads through the historic old town. Along the way, visitors can experience the former medieval fortification walls along the Véore, as well as the route to the hill of La Gontarde with its feudal castle and church.

The “Sentier des Deux Renards” can be reached from Valence by public transport. The family-friendly “Le Tour de la Petite Raye” circular tour takes around two hours, leads around Chabeuil, and begins in front of the tourist office at the indicated starting point.

Local Traditions

Chabeuil caillette is a small pâté made from pork and finely chopped herbs such as chard or lettuce. It is cooked in the oven and eaten hot or cold. Chabeuil maintains the tradition of caillette and holds a large caillette fair every year, featuring a ceremony and the induction of caillette enthusiasts.

The Chabeuil weekly market takes place every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., from 1 January to 31 December.
