History and culture

The Correrie, the lower house of the Carthusians of Val Sainte-Marie, comprises a Romanesque church building with three south-facing windows and barrel vaults.

The Val Sainte-Marie monastery was founded in 1144.

The Romanesque sheepfold of the Correrie preserves five rooms and walls two metres thick.

The Val Sainte-Marie monastery was arranged around two cloisters; the small cloister contained communal rooms, while a covered gallery surrounded the large cloister.

The 12th-century Romanesque chapel of the Correrie later became a site for ironworking, where a spring-powered saw set the mill in motion.

The former Val Sainte-Marie monastery now lies in ruins and cannot be visited.

The remains of the Château des Flandaines are located near the “The Plemiat tour” route. The château belonged to the defence system of the princes of Royans before it was demolished at the end of the 16th century.
