Aouste-sur-Sye: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The historical tour takes about two hours and leads through the old town centre of Aouste-sur-Sye, featuring 28 explanatory panels. It is marked by ground markings depicting the Roman Emperor Augustus. The tour begins in front of the town hall near the Pont de Drôme and ends in Rue des Moulins.

History and culture

The local history includes the present-day church of Aouste-sur-Sye, which was built from 1862 to 1879 under the direction of the architects Rey and Bossan. Its features include the apse with its woodwork, the pulpit and the large Stations of the Cross. The church can be visited in summer.

Another sign of the area’s industrial history is the Fresque sur ancienne usine. The mural covers 200 m² across three façades of the former Lembacel factory and commemorates the paper industry and the human history of Aouste-sur-Sye from 1850 to 2010. Paper bags were produced at the Papeterie Sacna-Lembacel-Mondi; 30 million bags were produced there in 1991. The papeterie represents paper production in Aouste-sur-Sye from 1685 to 2011.

The Roman mausoleum dates from the 2nd century. Two parts are located in Aouste-sur-Sye, while another is in the Musée Calvet in Avignon. Today’s Temple d’Aouste was built beside a road in the 19th century. The Fresque d’Auguste, painted in 2010, is a trompe-l’œil mural commemorating Emperor Augustus’s passage through Augusta.

Water and industry

Along the system of the Canal des moulins, also known as the Canal de Gervanne, water intakes, sluices and drops can still be seen. The Canal des moulins was part of Aouste-sur-Sye’s water-powered industrial system and supplied, among others, a silk-twisting mill and a paper mill.

Nature and activities

The Drôme creates great biodiversity and diverse landscapes in Aouste-sur-Sye and throughout the Drômetal year-round. Aouste-sur-Sye and the Drômetal in general are suitable for nature-based activities such as hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, canoeing, swimming, climbing and fishing.

One of the area’s natural features is the Cascade du Pas de Lauzens. There, the Lauzens passes through a narrow section of gorge and plunges over a rock ledge beside the D 70.

Market and orientation

The Sunday market in Aouste-sur-Sye offers local produce such as cheese, bread, fruit and vegetables, meat, wine and juices, honey and natural cosmetics. It also features prepared specialities such as Défarde, nut butter and jams. The market takes place at Place de la Poste, 26400 Aouste-sur-Sye.

Aouste-sur-Sye offers free visits as well as a picnic area, public toilets and parking facilities.

Cycling and canoeing

The Vélodrôme is a 52 km road cycling route between the Alps and Provence that runs close to the Drôme. It is connected to the ViaRhôna via the footbridge over the Drôme. On the section of the Vélodrôme leading to Aouste-sur-Sye, prominent buildings such as mills, silk factories and silk-twisting mills bear witness to the area’s industrial past.

Canoë Drôme offers canoe trips on the Drôme from Sainte-Croix to Aouste-sur-Sye. The routes are 11 to 34 km long and suitable for beginners through to advanced paddlers. Participants must be able to swim and submerge themselves; there must be no medical contraindication, and children are admitted from the age of six.
