Alixan is one of the medieval villages often referred to as “round villages”, which are particularly characteristic of southern France. The village is arranged in three concentric rings around a central molasse hill approximately ten metres high.
Culture
Of Alixan’s former fortification walls, only part of the Tour de Margat and a few loopholes remain today. The Église Saint-Didier stands on the summit platform of a molasse hill; its north wall leans against an existing fortified wall. Its Romanesque portal is semicircular; its arch rests on two capitals carved with the heads of “Valentinois” lions.
The esplanade in Alixan can be reached via a ramp that has existed in its current form since the 17th century or via a monumental staircase built on an arch. The surrounding area of Alixan is also home to the historic site of Abbaye de Vernaison, the enclosed Artothèque de Valence museum, the listed monument Abbatiale Saint-Ruf and the Abbaye de Léoncel.
Nature
The area surrounding Alixan includes the Pierre Chauve peak, the Roc de l'Épène peak, the Rocher du Roi Gros Nez mountain and the Le Perruclat mountain.
Activities
Rando Alixan offers hikes for all audiences; the outings take place on Thursdays and Sundays. Outings lasting half a day, a day or several days are available.
