Culture and History

The former priory – the Notre-Dame-de-la-Brune Church – is located on the Chemin du Prieuré in 26770 Aleyrac. The ruins of the Prieuré d’Aleyrac were built in the Provençal Romanesque style and date from the 12th century. The former priory, also known as the Notre-Dame-de-la-Brune Church, is municipally owned and classified as a historic monument.

A spring rises inside the church of the Prieuré d’Aleyrac and was traditionally believed to have healing properties for headaches and skin diseases; pilgrims could visit it to alleviate these ailments. The Chapelle Saint-François-de-Sales was built in the 18th century. In 1835, it was extended with a portico and a window taken from Notre-Dame.

Nature and Trails

The marked “Les forêts d’Aleyrac” route is a 10.44-kilometre, moderately difficult circular hike with 300 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. It offers an approximately 15-minute return walk to the ruins of the Prieuré d’Aleyrac, running south along the GR429.

The GR429 passes through Aleyrac and connects Dieulefit with Viviers in Ardèche; there, it forms a section of the European long-distance trail E4. In Aleyrac, the GR429 connects the GR9 with the GR42 and follows the route of the European long-distance trail E4.

The Sentier de l’Abbaye d’Aleyrac is an 8.4-kilometre trail through a natural, protected environment. The “Les forêts d’Aleyrac” circular hike runs mainly through woodland and offers views from the Aleyrac plateau across the surrounding mountain ranges as far as Mont Ventoux. The “Le tour des aguerris” route reaches Aleyrac at an altitude of 450 metres; a beautiful panorama is described there.

Local Character

Aleyrac is considered a transition area between different landscapes and climates, with a rich and diverse natural environment.

Visitors can buy goat’s cheese tommes at the local cheese dairy in Aleyrac. Aleyrac’s agricultural profile includes cattle farming, goat farming and goat’s cheese production, cereal cultivation, the production of lavender essence, and the cultivation or use of truffles.
