Culture and History

The Château de la Tour-des-Echelles underwent major construction phases in the 12th, 16th and 17th centuries. The château and its French garden were partially listed as historic monuments on 28 January 1949; the wall paintings on the entrance portal and in the room on the second floor of the east tower were classified as historic monuments on 1 March 1977.

The Soieries Bonnet industrial site in Jujurieux was protected as a historic monument on 31 January 2003. The protection covers, among other things, the factory and the forge building, which now houses the Musée des Soieries Bonnet. The “industrial châteaux” built in the 19th century form a remarkable architectural heritage associated with Bonnet’s silk mills.

The Château de Chenavel in the hamlet of Chenavel in Jujurieux has been mentioned since the 14th century. In Cossieux near Jujurieux, a former dovecote called “la Tour de Cossieux” and an adjoining summer pavilion are classified as historic monuments.

The Musée des Soieries Bonnet offers tours of former weaving workshops, meetings with former employees, demonstrations, exhibitions and the opportunity to explore the site.

Trails and Landscapes

The yellow hiking trail in Jujurieux is 4.5 km long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 204 m. The urban discovery trail “Et si Jujurieux m'était conté” covers the history of the town, its rural architectural heritage, the influence of the silk mills on urban planning, landscape development and notable trees.

Jujurieux has five hiking trails marked in yellow, blue, pink, orange or red. They all start at the town hall square, where an orientation map is available. Jujurieux is also one of twelve stages on the signposted Route du Bugey, an 87 km circular route from Poncin to Mérignat.

The hamlet of Chaux offers panoramic views over the Ain plain.

Winegrowing

The clay-limestone soil in Jujurieux favours winegrowing. After a decline in the 20th century, cultivation is experiencing a revival thanks to Cerdon AOC.

Getting There

The Musée des Soieries Bonnet can be reached via exit 9 of the A42 motorway at Pont-d’Ain, then by taking the D1084 towards Nantua and the D36 towards Jujurieux. Parking is available at Place Marcel Grillet in 01450 Jujurieux.
