The priory of Jayat was founded in the 11th century by the monks of Saint-Pierre de Mâcon. The church of Jayat is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The current neo-Gothic church replaced a Romanesque predecessor that extended along the road to Béréziat; its foundation stone was laid on 22 October 1877, and construction was completed in 1880.
Culture and history
The Moulin de Bruno was built around 1258 by Carthusian monks. It has four levels with working mill equipment, including millstones, rollers and a sack hoist.
The Moulin de Cézille, also known as Moulin Gaud, has been converted into a small museum. It contains a large waterwheel, a functioning horizontal sawmill, a grain mill, a power station and a Ruston-&‑Hornsby engine from 1931 that is still in operation.
