Culture

The straightforward Parcours historique de Culoz takes visitors through various periods from the Mesolithic to Roman times and presents the invention of the Serpollet brothers, along with their steam engine from 1888, installed in one of the first automobiles.

The Maison du Patrimoine is located in one of the oldest houses in Culoz, dating from the 16th century, and presents the history of the town from the Mesolithic to the present day. Among other things, it presents the history of the Serpollet brothers, Henry Dunant, Gertrude Stein and Jules Giguet, as well as mineralogical and archaeological collections.

People have lived in the Marais de Lavours since the retreat of the Würm glaciers in the Mesolithic, around 8,000 years ago; bone finds from a rock shelter in Culoz provide evidence of this.

The Office de Tourisme Bugey Sud offers guided tours of Culoz's old town and the Château de Montvéran. The château was built in 1316 by Pierre de Luyrieu on the rock of Montvéran and, apart from restorations and some changes resulting from the French Revolution, has largely been preserved.
