Culture and history

Ambronay Abbey was founded around the year 800 by Saint Barnard, a former officer of Charlemagne who became a monk. The former abbey houses the Notre-Dame church, which features architectural elements from the 13th and 15th centuries.

Fort Sarrazin consists of the remains of a fortified military complex that was built on the orders of the Count of Savoy and destroyed in 1330. The Porte de la Gargouille is the only surviving one of Ambronay's three historic town gates. Ambronay is recognised as a “Site Patrimonial Remarquable”.

The Musée Mémoires d'Autrefois displays 3,800 objects relating to the history of former occupations and traditional craft skills.

Since 1980, the Ambronay Festival has made this church an important venue for early music and Baroque music. The festival offers concerts and performances featuring Baroque music, world music, improvised music and family music shows.

On the first Sunday of every month, Ambronay hosts a monthly market focusing on short supply chains as well as local producers and craftspeople.

Leisure and nature

At the Base de loisirs de Longeville, canoe trips on the River Ain are offered on five routes of 7, 14, 18, 24 or 32 km.

The “en Rebattey” body of water covers 20 hectares, including 14 hectares of water surface. It is a meeting place for anglers and walkers.
