Geographical Location
Carpentras lies at the foot of Mont Ventoux in the plain of the Comtat Venaissin, whose former capital was Carpentras, between vineyards and mountains. Those who choose Carpentras as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there. Carpentras has rail connections via an SNCF railway station.
Culture
The Carpentras Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in France still in operation. Its construction began in 1367.
The Inguimbertine is a library museum. The Bibliothèque-musée Inguimbertine houses museum collections of fine arts, decorative arts, archaeology, as well as folk art and popular traditions. These include the Musée Duplessis, the Musée Sobirats, the Musée lapidaire et archéologique and the Musée Comtadin.
Saint-Siffrein Cathedral is classified as a historic monument and features a design typical of southern Gothic architecture. Saint-Siffrein Cathedral houses paintings by Mignard, Parrocel and Duplessis.
The Carpentras Courthouse is the former episcopal palace, built in the 17th century. It can be visited on a guided tour, which includes the bishops' ceremonial hall.
Cycling
The family-friendly cycling route “Au fil du Comtat” is 33 km long and starts and ends in Carpentras. The Via Venaissia is a secure greenway connecting Carpentras railway station with Pernes-les-Fontaines.
The “Autour du Canal de Carpentras” cycling route follows the Canal de Carpentras. The 3.8 km alternative cycleway project between Carpentras and Serres was one of the projects selected in the 2023 participatory budget. The Carpentras tourist information office provides cycling maps and topoguides.
Cuisine
The Carpentras truffle market takes place between November and March. The Confiserie du Mont-Ventoux produces Berlingots de Carpentras by hand according to a traditional recipe passed down through generations.
