In Tavernes, the new olive oil is celebrated every year in March at the Journado de l’Oli. The programme includes a tour of the mill, a tasting of primeur olive oil, regional products, folk performances, a demonstration of olive tree pruning and a large aioli meal.
History
The Church of Saint Cassian in Tavernes is mentioned as early as the 11th century. After suffering severe damage during the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt in the 17th century. Its bell tower was reconstructed at the beginning of the 19th century.
Cuisine
La Tavernaise offers tours of the olive mill in Tavernes, as well as tastings and the sale of olive oil. It produces French extra virgin olive oil in flavours such as green-fruity, ripe-fruity and traditional; flavoured oils are also available. La Tavernaise has held the AOP Provence designation since 2008 and has been organically certified since 2009.
Landscape
Tavernes lies in an agricultural plain characterised by vineyards and olive trees. A hike can be extended by three kilometres there and back to the Trois Croix viewpoint. At an elevation of 690 metres, it offers a 360-degree panorama and orientation panels.
Activities
The “Des pierres et des jeux” hiking route is 6.5 km long, takes around three hours, includes 270 metres of ascent and is classified as easy. It follows the Chemin de Notre-Dame to the Notre-Dame de Bellevue chapel.
At Tavernes’ pump track facility, only the following non-motorised or electric vehicles are permitted: mountain bikes, BMX bikes, balance bikes, scooters and skateboards. The “Au pied des campaniles à vélo” cycle route leads to Tavernes, makes a detour to the olive mill and then continues through the village.
