The circular hike “SIGNES – L’éléphant de pierre” is 7.4 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It leads to the numerous avens and the flora of the plateau.

Hiking and Nature

Roucas Traoucas is a limestone formation on the Siou Blanc plateau that resembles a stone elephant. The Le Latay natural area, which is of particular value, forms a 50-hectare valley along the stream of the same name. It can be reached from Signes via signposted hiking trails and features numerous springs, visible and underground waterways, as well as cascades.

The GR®9 long-distance hiking trail passes through Signes and runs for 966 kilometres between the Jura region and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. In the Var département, the GR®9 crosses the Sainte-Baume massif. Signes also has three “Balades des Oratoires” routes leading to eleven oratories and three calvaries.

Culture and History

The Chapelle Saint Jean was rebuilt in 1669 on the site of a chapel dating from the 12th century. The Saint Jean festival takes place there every year; the chapel is listed as a national monument. Signes’ religious heritage is connected with the fact that the village was owned by the bishops of Marseille for a long time and served as a place of residence for them.

The Chapelle de Chateauvieux is located at the original site of Signes and is considered the village’s only historical testimony. After falling into disrepair, it was rebuilt in 1587. Use of the cave next to the Bergerie des Maigres in Signes dates back to 3500 BC.

The Confiserie Fouque in Signes offers a tour of its nougat factory, including a tasting of the day’s production.
