Culture
The Porte Sarrazine was built in the 12th century and formed part of the medieval fortified quarter that served to defend the castle. The Church of Saint-Léger was also built in the 12th century and became the village’s principal religious centre in the 17th century.
The Notre-Dame-de-l'Ormeau or des Essarts Chapel is located 2 km from the village of Seillans, dates from the 12th century, and houses one of the finest Baroque-inspired winged altarpieces in Provence. It has been listed as a historic monument by decree since 16 October 1930. The chapel can only be visited by prior reservation; to arrange this, contact the tourist office.
Part of Stan Appenzeller’s work is permanently exhibited at the Maison Waldberg. Max Ernst’s bronze sculpture “Génie de la Bastille” can be viewed on the Place de la République. Along Seillans’s shady lanes and squares, galleries and artists’ studios welcome visitors.
Things to Do
The Seillans section of EuroVelo 8 runs from Claviers via the Viaduc du Rayol to Fayence and is considered one of the best-preserved sections.
Seillans has around 100 km of signposted hiking trails, spread across about a dozen adaptable circular routes, including the 32-km Grand Tour de Seillans.
Local Highlights
The municipal olive mill of Seillans is the only olive mill in the town still in operation. It was built in 1830 and continues to use traditional grinding and pressing methods.
Nature
A small part of the southern area of Seillans towards Lac de Méaulx lies within Natura 2000 special protection areas and zones of ecological and faunal interest, where rare species and habitats can be found.
