Pourcieux: holiday apartments and houses

Pourcieux lies at the foot of the hills of Mont Aurélien, whose summit reaches 880 metres. Mediterranean woodland and the rocky Baou ridge shape the landscape south and east of the town. Overall, hills, forests and vineyards cover nine-tenths of the municipality’s area.

Landscape

A route leads through vineyards and woodland at the foot of Baou: Les anciennes carrières de marbre is a 6-kilometre circular hike that takes around two hours. It is considered easy and is marked in yellow. At the entrance to the former marble quarries, visitors are warned that the old quarry walls are not secured.

History and culture

The first known mention of the castrum de Porcils, Pourcieux’s fortified centre, dates from around 1010. The Château de Pourcieux was built in 1764 by Jules Symphorien Pazery de Thorame, the last Seigneur of Pourcieux. The estate is a bastide in the Aix style and served as a country house. One of its towers is now dedicated to Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. The Château de Pourcieux has been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1993.

The historic Chapelle Saint-Martin in the Pourcieux area probably dates from the Middle Ages and served as a refuge during epidemics in the 16th century. Next to the Church of the Assumption are the ruins of a Minims monastery abandoned in 1771. A walk through the lanes of Pourcieux leads to the seigneurial dovecote.

The Pont romain entre Saint-Maximin et Pourcieux is classified as a Monument historique. It is located in Pourcieux and Saint-Maximin on the former RN 7. The local cultural heritage also includes the covered washhouse, built in 1910 and equipped with separate basins for rinsing and washing, as well as the Fontaine Vieille, which was converted into a washhouse at the beginning of the 20th century.

Walking and cycling experiences

The Vélorail de la Sainte Baume runs along a former railway line between Pourcieux and Saint-Maximin. Its route includes a tunnel, viaducts, bridges and a former railway station. The journey can cover up to 15 kilometres there and back.

The cycling tour De Pourrières à Pourcieux par le vignoble à vélo is also part of the described network of routes. It leads from Pourrières to Pourcieux through vineyards and along small, idyllic paths.

Wine

The Vignerons du Baou cooperative winery in Pourcieux was founded in 1912. It offers wines in three colours; its speciality is rosé. By appointment, Château des Brigands offers the opportunity to discover rosé, red and white wines from its terroir, as well as special cuvées.
