Culture
At the beginning of the path to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel stands the Saint-Jacques oratory, built from dressed stone. The site of Notre-Dame de Beauvoir is associated with a Roman settlement, and the chapel is located at an altitude of 660 metres. Every year on 14 August, a pilgrimage takes place to Notre-Dame de Beauvoir.
Only a few remnants of Montferrat’s former fortifications remain at the entrance to the main street. The former pilgrimage to Saint Fortunat originated with the solemn reception of the saint’s relics on 3 October 1694.
Saint-Roch Church was home to the Brotherhood of the White Penitents, founded in 1646. The church contains listed objects, including a white marble holy-water font and a wooden sculpture of Saint Roch with his dog; both date from the 16th century.
The Montferrat fountain, dating from 1751, is fed by the Pierrepont spring; the water reaches it through a one-kilometre-long underground aqueduct.
Trails
The Montferrat–Notre-Dame de Beauvoir family hike follows the Chemin des oratoires uphill to the chapel. The Chemin Saint-Pierre leads from the village through nature to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel. It is a paved path lined with old oratories.
The oratories along the Chemin Saint-Pierre are dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Francis of Paola, Saint Joseph and Notre-Dame. There is a car park at the entrance to the village, above the stadium, for the hike to Notre-Dame de Beauvoir.
Nature
The natural landscape of Pierrepont can be reached on foot from the village in just a few minutes. At the Pierrepont site, a clear, cool river invites quiet contemplation.
Local Attractions
Savonnerie de la Nartuby produces cold-process and kettle-boiled soaps, which are shaped, cut and packaged by hand. Its production area is not open to the public. The products are available online, through retail outlets, and at trade fairs and markets.
Le Rucher de Montfé offers a selection of Provençal honeys in Montferrat. It also offers honey-product tastings, farm-gate sales and sales at markets.
Les Délices de Syssy produces honey, beeswax candles, honey nougat, gingerbread, hard and soft sweets, and honey jams.
Getting Around
The northern part of the municipality of Montferrat is occupied by the Canjuers military camp and is closed to access.
