Culture and History

A small rock chapel dedicated to Saint Michael was established at the Baume Saint-Michel. The Baume Saint-Michel in Mazaugues is a rock shelter that has been used since the Early Neolithic and later served as a painted shelter and a place for working local flint.

The medieval castle is an important stop on the historical tour of Mazaugues. Bauxite mining in Mazaugues was finally discontinued at the end of the 1980s.

Nature and Trails

The Gorges du Caramy, formed by the Caramy, extend for approximately 4.5 kilometres between Tourves and Mazaugues. A hiking route follows the Caramy from its source near Mazaugues through the gorges to the Roman bridge at Tourves, passing through the Saut du Cabri canyon.

The Gorges du Caramy are suitable for walks, swimming, fishing and picnics. The Cirque des Escarettes is a limestone cirque above Mazaugues and the Vallon de l’Herbette. It can only be reached on foot via the GR99; it is 5 kilometres from the Caucadis car park.

Places and Activities

The Glacière de Pivaut can be reached from the D95 via a car park and an educational trail with several explanatory signs. It is located in a protected natural area where remarkable insect and plant species can be observed.

The Espace Sports Orientation des collines de Mazaugues offers four themed orienteering courses with an accompanying booklet, orienteering map, information boards, posts and question boxes. The activities are aimed at both families and competitive athletes.
