Les Mayons: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Réserve naturelle nationale de la plaine des Maures also encompasses the municipality of Les Mayons. In the Plaine des Maures, protected habitats provide a home to, among others, the European pond turtle, the Greek tortoise, the ocellated lizard and several species of frog. In addition, 134 bird species and 32 mammal species, including 9 bat species, can be observed there.

Nature

Between the Massif des Maures and the Plaine des Maures, at the foot of the village of Les Mayons, lies the Maison départementale de la nature des Mayons. The facility is surrounded by two hectares of meadows and olive trees and was established and is managed by the Var département. It is dedicated to environmental awareness and education.

Hiking

The Pin Pignon hike begins at the de la Fabrique car park at the entrance to Les Mayons. Its route leads through chestnut groves, maritime pine forests and cork oak forests, as well as past a hidden cabanon, to a viewpoint overlooking a mountain basin.

The “Balade dans la plaine des Maures” route partly runs within the area of the Réserve naturelle nationale de la plaine des Maures.

Culture and History

Les Mayons was elevated to municipal status by a decree of Napoleon III dated 7 November 1863, under the name Mayons du Luc. In Les Mayons, the Grand-père châtaignier, a venerable chestnut tree planted in the Middle Ages, serves as a monument.

The Saint Jean Church was built in the 17th century and houses a 17th-century painting depicting a crucifixion with John, Mary and the Grail. There were iron mines near Les Mayons, at the hamlets of Rascas and Valpayette.

At Les Ruchers des Maures, Lucien Lamoine, a beekeeper and chestnut grower in Les Mayons, offers products from his beehives and chestnut trees.
