La Garde-Freinet: Holiday apartments and houses
La Garde-Freinet lies in the heart of the Massif des Maures and is surrounded by natural areas considered impressive and well-preserved. Fort Freinet is a medieval fortified settlement: it covers 4,000 m² and was inhabited from the late 12th to the 16th century. Culture and history
Visiting Fort Freinet involves approximately 45 minutes of walking along a steep path. La Baume des Maures is also located in the Massif des Maures: the small cave is part of an area with few caves, and burial remains from the Late Prehistory were found there. It is accessible only on foot.
The History Museum in La Garde-Freinet houses an ex-voto painting from the second or third quarter of the 18th century. It comes from the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Miremer and was listed as a protected historic monument on 24 June 2003. The Archistoire route invites visitors to discover the squares, buildings and historical figures of La Garde-Freinet.
At the Conservatoire du Patrimoine du Freinet, exhibitions present chestnut cultivation, silkworm farming and cork harvesting. There is also a permanent exhibition on the archaeological site of Fort Freinet. The Chapelle Saint-Jean, Saint-Antoine et Saint-Crépin was founded in 1622 and completed at the beginning of 1628. Today, the Chapelle Saint-Jean is the municipality's exhibition space. The municipality of La Garde-Freinet bought it back in 2002 to use it as a publicly accessible cultural venue.
Nature and trails
The La Garde-Freinet–Notre-Dame de Miremer route is a 9.7 km-long, shaded walk to a pilgrimage chapel. The Le rucher de Blay et le moulin à eau de Blanche route passes a restored 17th-century apiary and the remains of a watermill. La Garde-Freinet is also the starting point for numerous hikes, mountain-bike routes and horseback rides.
The Le Moulin de l'Adrech route leads to an old windmill on a hill ridge approximately 400 metres high. From there, the panorama extends as far as the sea. The Les Hameaux du Sud route offers impressive views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Maures and leads to the hamlets of Camp de la Suyère, Val d'Aubert and Les Sinières in the Massif des Maures.
The Sentier de la Garde-Freinet à Grimaud par les Vernades runs through a cork-oak forest, known as a suberaie. The La Garde-Freinet–Saint-Clément route is a family-friendly walk through vineyards, meadows and areas with fruit trees in the Saint-Clément district, as well as through chestnut and cork-oak stands.
The La Garde-Freinet–Le Pont Romain route runs through the Plaine des Maures, with vineyards, umbrella pines and striking slabs of pink sandstone. The Hameau de la Mourre–Les Cabrettes route offers views of the Massif des Maures and the Plaine des Maures.
Regional traditions
The activity Les trésors de la ruche allows visitors to enter a beehive wearing a beekeeper's veil and learn about the life of bees and honey production. It also includes tasting different types of honey.
The Fête de la Châtaigne included a chestnut market on Sundays 18 and 25 October and 8 November, offering chestnuts and products made from them, regional produce, roasted chestnuts and entertainment.
