La Bastide: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
La Bastide lies at the foot of Mont Lachens, which, at 1,715 m, is considered the highest peak in the Var. Those who choose La Bastide as their place to stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Hiking and Nature
The “LA BASTIDE – Sommet de Lachens” hiking route initially follows the GR®49 from the church square, marked with white and red signs, to the upper edge of the village. At the end of the paved section, the trail is 300 m from the starting point. The route leads to an orientation board at 1,685 m and ends at a summit directly opposite the 1,715-metre-high summit of Mont Lachens.
The “Le tour du Brouis” hike begins and ends at the Col de Clavel between La Bastide and La Martre. From the village of La Bastide, the starting point can be reached via the D21 towards Logis du Pin after 2 km. The route explores Brouis Mountain with its old, remarkable forests and secluded clearings, which alternate with open landscapes and views of the surrounding peaks.
Villagescape
La Bastide consists of a lower and an upper village, separated by the D21. In the village centre, the Sainte-Madeleine church stands near the former château, now used as the town hall, on the crest of a hill. The church has a single nave with a groin vault, a flat-ended choir, and a gilded altarpiece on the high altar. The present-day church was probably built in 1676; a mention in the record of the pastoral visitation of 9 and 10 October 1703 supports this date.
History
The Fontaine-lavoir du bas is a covered washhouse with three basins for rinsing, washing, and particularly heavily soiled laundry. It also has an oval basin carved from a monolithic block and was restored in 1926.
The first documentary mentions of the “bourg castral de la Bastide d’Esclapon”, also known as the “castrum de Bastida”, date from the period between 1232 and 1244, as well as from 1235.
