Peyruis: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

From the former castle of Peyruis, a monumental keep converted into a dovecote, as well as remains of towers and fortification walls that form terraced gardens in so-called “banquets”, have been preserved.

Peyruis lies at the foot of densely wooded hills on the right bank of the Durance. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Peyruis can choose the town as the destination for their accommodation.

Townscape and history

Eight fountains line the winding streets of Peyruis’s old town; these include the Parlatan Fountain, which was rebuilt in 1815. Created in 2022, the “La Balade des Fontaines” trail leads to these eight fountains and conveys the history of Peyruis. The medieval entrance gate, known as the “Juiverie”, recalls a Jewish merchant community from the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Church of Saint-Nicolas houses colourful stained-glass windows from the 16th to the 19th century, numerous paintings, and reliquary busts of Saint Roch and Saint Nicholas. The parish church of Saint-Nicolas also features Gothic elements from the 15th century, stained-glass windows from the 16th and 17th centuries, and murals representative of the 20th century.

The Chapelle Saint-Roch dates from 1720–1721. It is used for cultural events such as art exhibitions and musical performances and is mainly open at weekends.

Landscape and trails

The castle site of Peyruis offers views of the surrounding hills, the old town, the plain, and the orchards and cultivated areas of the Durance Valley. The Tour des Iscles passes through olive groves and fields and offers views of the Durance Valley from the rocky promontory of the village of Peyruis.

The signposted Tour de Praconteau begins next to Peyruis Town Hall, passes through the old town, and then continues through olive groves towards Collet de Piozin. It passes through the wooded Massif de Peyruis, which is recognised as a ZNIEFF area (Zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique). The Tour de Praconteau is a difficult 14-kilometre circular hike with 500 metres of elevation gain and a duration of five hours.

At Champ de Gau, terraced areas with stone retaining walls invite visitors to go for walks thanks to the numerous local springs.

Local character

Peyruis promotes local products such as fruit, olive oil, and nougat.

The “Autour de Tourdeaux” mountain-bike circular route begins at the ruins of Peyruis Castle and follows a long trail to the Chapelle d’Augès and then to Jas de Sigalette.
