La Saulce: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Zone humide des Piles wetland covers 6.5 ha and is located near the La Saulce tollbooth. It was newly created with a network of ponds as compensation for the extension of the A51. An approximately 450 m long educational trail with five information stations leads through the area; the visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. At least 22 dragonfly species have been recorded there, including Agrion de mercure and Agrion bleuissant, which are rare in the département. The private Zone humide des Piles wetland is freely accessible exclusively via the marked path.

Paths and Landscape

The long La Sainte-Croix circular hike passes through the villages of La Saulce, Lardier and Valença, crosses the extensive forests of the Bois de la Pinée and offers a view over the Durance Valley from the Sainte-Croix viewpoint.

A developed, comfortable path provides access to the Tour du Guet above La Saulce. The Les balcons de la Durance gravel route passes through the centre of La Saulce and over the A51 motorway and the Durance. The stage from Ventavon to La Saulce is a moderately difficult riding route measuring 23 km.

History and Townscape

The remains of La Saulce's square keep can be visited on the La Sainte-Croix route. The lords of Orange had it built in the 13th century to dominate the valley and monitor the Roman road.

The Battle of Les Piles began on 7 April 1815 at the entrance to La Saulce. It involved Napoleonic supporters and royalist troops.

The three historic fountains of La Saulce are part of the town's historical heritage. They are located in the historic centre at Place de la Fontaine, on Avenue Napoléon opposite the beauty salon, and at Place de la Liberté.

Religious Sites

The Oratoire Saint Marcellin is located north of and above La Saulce in the Saint-Marcellin district, near the former Roman road from Sisteron to Gap. It is included in a parish programme in which Masses are celebrated once a year in front of the local oratories.

The church of La Saulce stands on the village square opposite the post office and bakery.
