The entire municipality of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer lies within the Camargue Regional Nature Park. At the same time, the entire municipality is classified as a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.

Culture and History

Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer, a Romanesque-Provençal church dating from the 12th century, is located in the immediate vicinity of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. It was fortified at the beginning of the 14th century and served as a refuge for the population. The roof can be accessed from outside via a spiral staircase with 53 steps. In the crypt, the church houses the statue of Sara and her relics.

Festo Vierginenco includes a mass in the Provençal language, a procession of young women with their godmothers and mounted Gardians, the presentation of diplomas, the blessing of the foals in the arenas, and equestrian games. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is the only village that has preserved and continues this tradition.

The Musée des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer houses ethnographic collections relating to the figure of the Marquis de Baroncelli and to the traditions of the Camargue. It also presents the maritime history of the Camargue coast through numerous underwater excavations.

The surroundings of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer include Plage de Beauduc beach, the island of Le Cassieu, and Pointe du Sablon cape. The historic site of Abbaye de Sauve-Réal (Sylveréal) is also located nearby.
