Saint-Gilles is home to the Abbatiale de Saint-Gilles, which has a large, partly underground crypt arranged around the tomb of Saint Giles. The Abbatiale de Saint-Gilles is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France”.

Anyone considering Saint-Gilles as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment here.

Culture and history

Since 17 September 2003, the Musée de la Maison Romane has carried the French designation “Musée de France” within the meaning of French heritage law. Its archaeology room displays medieval sculptures from the Romanesque abbey of Saint-Gilles. Part of the museum is housed in a Romanesque building dating from the late 12th century.

The Château d’Espeyran is situated on a 13-hectare estate that includes a 7-hectare archaeological reserve. The château has preserved its original furnishings. It is not permanently open to visitors; occasional events make it possible to open it to the public.

In the historic centre of Saint-Gilles, there is heritage interpretation signage with panels, totems and information tables about notable houses, remains of the town fortifications, the port and various neighbourhoods. The information is available around the clock, seven days a week, via QR codes in five languages: French, English, German, Italian and Spanish.

The Port de plaisance de Saint-Gilles provides direct access to the Canal du Rhône à Sète.

The Marais du Cougourlier is a species-rich wetland habitat featuring birds, fish, dragonflies, reeds and rushes. Around 114 hectares of the Marais du Cougourlier are designated as an “Espace Naturel Sensible Départemental”; one of the objectives of this protection category is to open the area to the public.
