Culture and History
A striking testimony to the town’s history is the Fontaine 1568. It was built in 1568 as a communal fountain, repaired and rebuilt several times over the centuries, and acquired its present appearance in particular in 1868. Water flows from four outlets with bearded mascaron faces.
The Vierge du Foussa is a six-metre-high ex-voto, carved directly into the rock and depicting the profile of the Virgin Mary. It was created in gratitude for the protection of Rognes during the Second World War and its liberation. The Foussa plateau became the cradle of the historic village of Rognes.
The parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption leans against the town walls. It was built from the end of 1607 and completed around 1610. In summer, the Festival aux Carrières transforms the former quarries into an open-air stage for classical music, jazz, rock, electronic music, cinema and performances.
Festivals and Traditions
Since 1989, the Grand Marché « Truffes et Gastronomie » has been held in Rognes every year on the Sunday before Christmas. At the festival of Saint Denis in October, small aniseed breads are distributed after Mass.
At the Chapelle et ermitage Saint-Marcellin, the pilgrimage tradition continues in Rognes at the end of September. It includes an open-air Mass, the blessing of the grape harvest and a communal meal in the area of the hermitage.
