Culture and History

One of the monuments that can be seen while walking through Pélissanne is the Tour de l’Horloge, dating from the 16th century. The present-day building of the Church of Saint-Maurice was constructed from 1824 to 1830. The Gothic bell tower comes from the 17th-century church. The church also houses the wooden altarpiece triptych of Saint Roch from the late 15th century, which is classified as a historic monument.

The Fontaine du Pélican was built in the Aix style in 1769–1770 and is the town’s landmark. Its clover-shaped basin is complemented by a four-metre-high column made of Cabardel stone. The Passadouires washhouse dates from 1853 and has six small basins.

The Moulin Jean Bertrand was built as a grain mill in 1775 and used as an oil mill from 1786 onwards. The oil-milling activity was once resumed in the former stable of the Moulin Jean Bertrand under the name Moulin des Costes. Wooden panelling and several wall paintings have been preserved in the Chapelle des Pénitents gris; at the same time, the chapel is considered an important part of Pélissanne’s local cultural and historical heritage.

The archaeological site of the Chapelle Saint-Laurent de Cabardel preserves traces of a Neolithic settlement dating from around 4000 BC. The Parc Maureau was created in 1642 under the name Clos Chauffier.

Wine and Local Traditions

Domaine de Sainte Philomène is a 50-hectare wine estate in the AOC Coteaux d’Aix appellation. It is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves and produces oil and wine. Domaine de la Boulie produces wines with the Coteaux d’Aix designation as well as country wines on approximately 20 hectares.

At the Moulin des Costes, visitors can learn about the work of the mill and taste the olive oils produced there. The Pélissanne market takes place on Sunday mornings. In addition to fruit and vegetables, it offers Provençal herbs, olives, goat’s cheese, cold cuts, olive oil, jam and honey.

Landscape and Trails

The Sentier des Vignerons begins at the Cave des Vignerons de Pélissanne and is a 13-kilometre hiking route. It passes vineyards and olive groves before returning to Pélissanne along shaded paths.

The Pélissanne orientation table offers a 180-degree panoramic view during the day, stretching from Montagne Sainte-Victoire to Arles.

Pélissanne can be reached from Salon-de-Provence by bus routes 4, 8, 14, 52 and 7. Route 7 operates exclusively for the market on Sundays.
