Landscape and Wine

Some parcels of the Château Simone vineyard are more than 125 years old, while the cellars were established in the 16th century by the religious order of the Grands Carmes d’Aix. The park gardens of Château Simone connect the terraced vineyards with the banks of the Arc. The vineyard lies as a mosaic of parcels in a wooded setting.

Culture and History

The Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Marc-la-Morée belonged to King René from 1471 to 1475 and is now part of Meyreuil’s municipal heritage. It is located on the right bank of the Arc, among pine and oak trees, near the ancient Via Aurelia.

In Le Plan de Meyreuil, the Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue was built in 1957 after the district had still been without a church and lacked funding. The chapel has a square bell tower as well as statues of Saint Anthony and Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The Église paroissiale Saint-Marc has a monumental portal bearing the year 1689. Above the portal is a small statue of Notre-Dame de la Rose from the 11th century; the façade features an oculus window with a lion motif.

Traditions and Events

Every year on 25 April, a Mass is celebrated in Meyreuil for the Feast of Saint Mark, and traditional Provençal daube is served. On the first Sunday after 25 April, a pilgrimage to the Chapelle Saint-Marc-la-Morée and a crafts fair in the village are part of Meyreuil’s Saint Mark programme. The Chapelle Saint-Marc La Morée can be visited on 25 April.

The Crèche animée de Meyreuil opens to the public on 11 December and remains on display each year until February. The Souper Calendal is a traditional evening held at the beginning of December, when Provençal dishes such as anchoïade, bourride and the “thirteen desserts” are served.
