Culture and History

Les Milles is home to the Site-Mémorial du Camp des Milles. It is the only large French internment and deportation camp that is still intact and open to the public.

The Église Sainte-Madeleine complements this historical heritage: its first simple building was constructed between 1696 and 1702, and the extension was completed in 1746. The church has a square bell tower with a campanile, as well as a façade with two sculpted niches. After the French Revolution, it was refurnished with works of art from various religious buildings in Aix-en-Provence.

Remembrance

To commemorate the liberation, the residents of Les Milles traditionally gather every 21 August at around 6:30 p.m. at the Chapelle du Serre, after a wreath has been laid at the village war memorial. The Chapelle du Serre was built in 1946; for this purpose, the residents of Les Milles collected stones from a German bunker near the Arc.
