Culture and History
The Musée Alphonse Daudet has been officially recognized as a “Musée de France” under French heritage legislation since 17 September 2003. The four hypogea of Fontvieille are also protected as historic monuments. Their architecture originated in the local area and later spread towards Var, Vaucluse and Languedoc. The Castelet hypogeum is the only one of the four hypogea recorded in the territory of Fontvieille that is open to the public.
The Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens was built in 1695 from stone quarried in Fontvieille. It has two differently designed bell towers, built in 1765 and 1866 approximately a century apart. The Moulin Ribet, also known as the Moulin Saint-Pierre, dates from 1814.
Museums and Sightseeing
The Château de Montauban is now a museum centre dedicated to the history of Fontvieille. Its Daudet collection includes manuscripts, paintings, photographs, prints, newspapers from earlier periods and the writing desk of the writer Alphonse Daudet. The château offers self-guided and guided tours, a treasure hunt and educational workshops.
The Moulin Alphonse Daudet was restored in 1935; a museum dedicated to the writer Alphonse Daudet was established there.
Nature and Ancient Water Engineering
Mont Paon in Fontvieille is designated as a sensitive natural area of the Bouches-du-Rhône département.
The Roman aqueducts and the Barbegal mill formed a complex system consisting of two parallel aqueducts. They carried drinking water from the Alpilles to Arles and supplied a mill capable of producing flour for “Arelate”.

Les Oliviers de l’Aqueduc offers olive oils bearing the AOP Huile d’olive de la Vallée des Baux-de-Provence designation at its boutique on Chemin de Bédarrides in Fontvieille and on Fridays at the Fontvieille market.
