Nature and trails

The Crêtes du Bauroux hiking route is a moderately difficult, 11.9 km circular trail that takes approximately five hours; the total ascent is 581 m. The circular hike starts and ends at the car park of Séranon Town Hall and is marked with GR® and PR signs. The Alpes-Maritimes département maintains the route, including its signage and markings.

The Sentier du Vertige in Séranon includes a Via Ferrata, a Via Cordata and an interpretation trail. There are also at least 150 climbing routes in seven sectors in the village: Le Potager, Chapeau Haut, Chapeau Bas, La Taillante, Le Mur du Pin, Les Grandes Voies and La Terrasse.

The Route Napoléon à cheval is a marked and prepared 360 km equestrian trail from Grasse via Séranon to Vizille.

Geographical setting

Séranon lies on the Route Napoléon, which follows the route taken by Emperor Napoleon in March 1815.

History

Vieux Séranon was a former village located on a mountain slope; today, only ruins remain. The Église Saint-Michel is the last clearly visible remnant. Its ruins above Vieux Séranon date from the early 14th century.

The castle and the village were later moved to a rocky summit; before 1297, the former site was already known as Séranon Vieux. A church dedicated to Saint Michael was built at the old site and has been mentioned since the 13th century.

Emperor Napoleon I rested for several hours at the Bastide du Broundet on the night of 2–3 March 1815.

Buildings and culture

The Chapelle Sainte-Brigitte is a 16th-century chapel in the Provençal Romanesque style. It stands on a hill and offers panoramic views over the valley; its interior can be visited.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Gratemoine has been documented since 1060 and belonged to the Lérins Abbey. It displays features of Romanesque architecture. It can be visited free of charge year-round from Monday to Friday; access is available on request at the town hall.

Festivals

The Saint-Louis festival in La Doire takes place on the last weekend of August and includes numerous events. The Notre-Dame festival in Séranon takes place on the first weekend of September.
