Saorge: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Saorge lies above the Roya gorges and is arranged like an amphitheatre on the mountainside, having once been a fortress. The medieval character of the village is reflected in its maze of alleyways and vaulted passages. The Nice–Cuneo railway line has a stop called “Fontan-Saorge”; from there, it is a 20-minute walk.
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Saorge plans their stay with Saorge as the destination.
Culture
The Saorge Monastery is a former Franciscan monastery and a remarkable example of Baroque architecture. Visitors can explore the monastery independently and also discover its terraced garden. The complex includes a cloister decorated with 18th-century frescoes and an exceptional ensemble of nine sundials.
The Church of Saint-Sauveur is a Baroque church with trompe-l’œil columns and a high altar featuring marble inlays. It also has a fully restored Italian-style organ, which is regularly played at concerts and religious events.
The Madone del Poggio Chapel is a building of early Romanesque art with frescoes and a seven-storey bell tower in the Lombard style. It is privately owned, but can be visited on certain days of the year, particularly during the Journées du Patrimoine.
Malmort Castle is a fortification that survives today as a ruin. It has been mentioned since the 13th century and was restored in the 17th century. Saorge is also an important stop on the “Route du Baroque et des orgues historiques de la Vallée de la Roya”.
