Sallagriffon is an old village on a hill at the foot of Mont Saint-Martin and Mount Miollans, in the Estéron Valley and on the edge of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département. The village is built of dressed stone and is dominated by a fortified house, a restored former château.

The challenging Sallagriffon–Mont Saint-Martin circular hike takes six hours, is 9.5 kilometres long, and involves 591 metres of ascent and 593 metres of descent. The route starts and ends in Sallagriffon and passes through Sallagriffon, Aiglun and Sigale.
The Alpes-Maritimes département maintains the route to Mont Saint-Martin, including its signage and waymarking, as part of the PDIPR.
The footpath from Sallagriffon’s entrance car park to the Clue d’Aiglun takes 45 minutes. The route through the Clue d’Aiglun begins at Sallagriffon’s entrance car park at an altitude of 750 metres. Because of the extremely narrow gorges, low water levels are essential; in places, the route runs along rock ledges outside the water.
The GR 510 runs from Sallagriffon to Sigale. In the surrounding area, the section of the GR®510 between Sigale and Sallagriffon leads to a well-preserved old bridge over the Riolan gorges.
Culture and History
The Eglise Sainte-Marguerite was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century and subsequently dedicated to Saint Margaret. In Sallagriffon, it is a historic site and monument.
Roman remains have been documented in the territory of Sallagriffon. Sallagriffon’s original fortified settlement centre, the castrum, has been mentioned since the 13th century.
In the surrounding area, the Pont du Riolan spans the Riolan, a tributary of the Estéron, and allows the deep gorges of the same name to be crossed on the way to Sallagriffon. Also in the surrounding area, the Pont du Riolan spans the Riolan gorge; as a Sardinian remnant, it served as the border between France and the Duchy of Savoy until 1860.
