La Tour: Holiday Apartments and Houses

La Tour-sur-Tinée lies on a ridge above the valley. Around the village, the landscape combines wooded peaks, gentle hills and sweeping views across the surrounding landforms.

The culture of La Tour includes the Chapelle des Pénitents blancs de La Tour. Its oldest section contains an exceptional series of frescoes from the late 15th century. The fresco cycle depicts the Last Judgment, the virtues, the vices and scenes from the Passion of Christ.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in La Tour should consider the village as a destination in its own right.

Culture

The Chapelle des Pénitents blancs de La Tour was classified as a historic monument by decree of 18 April 1944. Its frescoes have been protected as movable cultural property since 1908.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste dates mainly from the 14th century and was classified as a historic monument on 14 September 1943. The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption-et-Saint-Martin in La Tour-sur-Tinée contains an altarpiece from the Rosary Chapel and a painting depicting the Rosary.

In the Béal craft district stands the municipal oil mill, “lou defissi”. It is a hydraulic mill with a metal wheel fitted with paddles and fed with water from above, known as the “roda”. Since 1992, it has been classified as a “machine à extraire des fluides” among the historic monuments. The district also retains former oil mills and grain mills dating from the 18th century.

Village Character and Landscape

The historic centre of La Tour-sur-Tinée has largely preserved its medieval character, with paved lanes and painted façades surrounding a central square.

Trails and Annual Market

The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Alloche in the La Vignasse district can be reached on foot via the GR 510 hiking trail. Several hiking routes lead from La Tour, ranging from leisurely circular walks to more challenging trails to neighbouring villages.

Every April, La Tour hosts the Fête de la graine. It includes an exchange of vegetable seeds and plants, as well as a producers’ market.
