Culture and History
Above the Lévanza stands the Pont du Coq, a footbridge of medieval origin that was rebuilt in 1710. The Pont du Coq has been listed as a historic monument in its entirety since 1987.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines has been classified as a historic monument since 22 May 1951. Its furnishings include 15th-century frescoes covering an area of 225 m². Guided tours of the chapel are available by prior reservation.
The Chapelle de l’Annonciade has an elliptical floor plan characteristic of Baroque art, wall decorations and imitation marble featuring a cycle depicting the life of Christ. It also houses the treasury museum of the Collégiale.
The Chapelle de l’Assomption has a Renaissance-style façade and an Italian-influenced campanile. The Musée des Orgues Historiques is located on the upper floor of the Maison du Patrimoine et des Traditions Brigasques.
The Maison du Patrimoine et des Traditions Brigasques conveys the traditional local life of La Brigue. This includes beekeeping, agriculture, forestry and viticulture, sheep farming and cheese production.
The Collégiale Saint-Martin has a rich collection of 16th-century altarpieces. These include the Retable de l’adoration by Louis Bréa, the Retable de la crucifixion, the altarpieces of Sainte Marthe and Saint Erasme, and the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges triptych by Sébastien Fuzeri.
Only the ruins of Château des Lascaris remain today; they have been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1949.
Local Traditions
The Fête de la Brebis Brigasque is an event held annually in La Brigue in autumn. It celebrates the local sheep breed and traditional pastoral know-how. The milk of Brigasque sheep is used to produce local cheeses such as “sora” and “toma”.
The medieval festival of La Brigue takes place every two years on the third weekend of July.
Trails and Activities
The via ferrata of La Brigue runs above the medieval village and its 80 m-high vertical cliffs. It includes eight monkey bridges and a 120 m-long zip line.
The Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende–La Brigue hiking trail is an easy, 4 km-long one-way route. The “balade brigasque” is an 8 km-long tourist cycling loop.
