L’Escarène was a medieval stopping place on the Route du Sel until the 19th century.

Those considering L’Escarène as a holiday destination may want to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, together with the chapels of the White and Black Penitents, forms an exceptional Baroque ensemble classified as a historic monument. The Grinda organ in L’Escarène was built by the Grinda brothers in 1791 and is still used for concerts.

The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace was built on the mountainside by the community of L’Escarène towards the end of the 17th century. It has always served as a place of pilgrimage and as the setting for old ceremonial traditions that were religious in nature and later became festive. Every year, a procession to the Chapelle Saint-Pancrace takes place to celebrate Saint Augustine.

Mills and local traditions

The municipal oil mill is a Greek-style mill with stone millstones, a hand press, scourtins, a water wheel and settling basins. A reserved olive-oil tour includes a 17th-century oil mill, an olive oil tasting and an introduction to the AOC Olive de Nice.

The grain mill houses the Musée du Cougourdon, which displays works made from decorated gourds; visits to the Moulin Musée are possible year-round.

Paths and mountain routes

The seventh stage of the Cols Connectés 2026 starts in L’Escarène and leads to the summit of the Col de Braus in the municipality of Lucéram; it is 10 kilometres long and involves 662 metres of ascent. The Col de Braus can be travelled by road in summer and winter.

In the Pays des Paillons, there are more than 500 kilometres of hiking trails connecting hamlets and villages across its 11 municipalities, from the valleys to the mountain ridges. La ScarenaBerra is a 12-kilometre botanical hiking trail.

Transport

The L’Escarène TER stop has no ticket office; tickets can only be purchased from a regional ticket machine.
