The Clue du Chaudan reveals a special side of Entraunes: the short, water-rich gorge leads via jumps, slides and usually deep pools to a 30-metre-high waterfall, which can be descended using two consecutive abseils.

Nature

Since 4 September 2021, the Roche Grande integral nature reserve has been located within the municipality of Entraunes, in Mercantour National Park. It covers 481 hectares, consisting predominantly of meadows, rock faces and scree slopes, as well as isolated stands of Swiss stone pine and larch.

Public access to the Roche Grande integral reserve is strictly prohibited without the prior authorisation of the director of Mercantour National Park. Exemptions apply to scientific work and to educational and communication activities provided for in the management plan.

The Tour du plateau d'Estenc leads to the source of the Var, passing a small artificial lake and the Sanguinière stream, and continuing through a larch forest.

The moderately difficult Petit circuit du vallon de Gorgias is a circular hike from the Sanguinière car park, covering 4.98 km with an elevation gain of 275 m. The trail passes through a forest of larches, Swiss stone pines and mountain pines; rhododendrons and bilberries grow in the undergrowth, and their fruit is favoured by black grouse.

The route through the Vallon de l'Estrop passes moorland areas. Alpine ibex can be observed at Roche Grande, while the Rocher du Pigeon provides a habitat for rock ptarmigans. The Vallon de l'Estrop hike starts and ends in the hamlet of Estenc in Entraunes and leads through a large, grassy high-altitude pasture valley shaped by erosion.

Things to Do

The Clue du Chaudan can be reached from the car park below the village by walking a few metres further downhill along the road towards the GR52a.

The Estenc Nordic centre, located on the Estenc plateau between 1,780 and 1,850 m, offers three regularly groomed routes for cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers. The Pra-long Nordic loop near Estenc is 1.8 km long, marked green and intended for beginners.

The Refuge de la Cantonnière at Estenc is accessible by car all year round; in winter, the D2202, which is not cleared any further, ends there.

Culture

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité has an asymmetrical, fortified bell tower and preserves an apse originally dating from the 13th century. The church contains several works by Jean André de Castellane, including four officially authenticated works.

As part of restoration work, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité was converted into a comfortable, versatile space usable year-round, with adjustable lighting and underfloor heating. Its opening for cultural activities such as exhibitions and performances was also planned.

The Chapelle Saint Sébastien et Saint Roch contains original frescoes by Andréa de Cella and has been protected as a historic monument since 1947. It stands at the foot of the road to the Col de la Cayolle and was built sometime between 1500 and 1515.

The Chapelle de la Sainte-Trinité in Estenc was built in 1555. In 1947, it was dismantled and rebuilt at its present location.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Grâces in Entraunes-Estenc dates from 1722–1723 and preserves murals, religious artefacts and numerous high-quality wood carvings.
